Paint the Swan REaD

Paint The Town REaD (PTTR) is an Early Literacy Community campaign that aims to increase the awareness of the importance of reading and provide opportunities for parents to talk, read, sing, rhyme and play with their children from birth.

The concept was developed over 10 years ago by Rhonda Brain, the then Principal of Parkes Public School. Since then it has spread to Western Sydney and over 15 other locations in the Eastern States of Australia

Paint The Swan REaD (PTSR) is the first of these campaigns in WA. It is funded by donations to United Way WA and is run as a collaborative effort with community partners, CLAN Midland, The Smith Family, Dyslexia-SPELD Literacy Services, City of Swan Library Services, Communities for Children and United Way WA.

PTTR encourages the whole community to support the development of children’s early literacy skills from birth, so they will be ready for reading and writing at school. This development mainly occurs through talking, singing, reading, rhyming and playing with children from birth. A solid foundation in basic literacy is critical for the acquisition of literacy skills at school, which in turn is essential for employment and adult life successes. Research shows if a child enters school without these skills, the literacy gap between them and those ready to read and learn is likely to widen not narrow, regardless of the excellence of the schools’ teaching skills.
